The Chinese language teaching in International Chinese Education Center of School of Humanities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has a history of nearly 30 years. Currently, Chinese classes include the general track, (which is divided into 6 levels), Program for Chinese Heritage Learners (Huayiban), Advanced Culture and Business Course and other special classes, as well as elective courses such as Chinese Calligraphy, Taichi.

The International Chinese Education Center, School of Humanities employs over 70 experienced teachers, most of whom have the PHD degree, or possess abundant experience teaching Chinese overseas. The school features small classes and all classrooms are equipped with multi-media teaching facilities. Since 2003, the university has set up HSK test centers, providing comfortable and considerate services for the examinees.

Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities, for instance, a foreign student talent competition, dragon boat racing, table tennis competitions and a New Year’s Party to further develop their abilities, cultivate their interests and make new friends.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University is located in Xujiahui, which boasts convenient transportation options and an elegant learning environment.

General track:

1. 20 class hours per week

2. Levels: The track is divided into 6 levels: Elementary A, Elementary B,  Intermediate A, Intermediate B, Advanced A and Advanced B.

Special classes

Program for Chinese Heritage Learners (Huayiban)

Target students:

The program is for students with Chinese background who can communicate in Chinese (Mandarin or Chinese dialects) in daily life but have very limited ability in reading and writing Chinese characters (knowing less than 200 Chinese characters).

Program Objectives:

This program is designed to develop students' Chinese reading and writing abilities through intensified training and to further enhance their speaking and listening abilities of Mandarin in the hope that most students will be able to reach Elementary 4 level or even intermediate level at the end of the program with a more balanced and overall improved Chinese language competence.

Program format :

Reading & Writing:  12 class hours/ week

Listening & Speaking: 8class hours / week

Advanced Culture and Business Course

Target students: advanced students

Program Objectives:

To provide seminars on Chinese traditional culture, Chinese society and Chinese economy for advanced students who want to take deeper dive into China.

Program format :

20 class hours per week, with the following classes: Advanced Business Chinese, Financial Chinese, Selected Readings of Chinese Literature, Chinese history and culture, English to Chinese Translation, etc. (Classes may vary. Please refer to the class schedule of the semester you intends to attend for)

Elective courses

HSk Tutoring Class, Tai Chi, Chinese Calligraphy

Cultural Activities & language practice

（1）Visits to historic cultural sites and natural sights in and around Shanghai;

（2）Art viewing;

（3）Language practice with Chinese cultural or historic sites viewing.
